A TRIPLE LIFE
Over the past two decades, Stacey has lived a triple life as an active comedy performer, teacher, and writer, as a Founder/Artistic Director of an improv theater, and as an Associate Creative Director of a marketing consultancy.
Stacey’s triple life has been possible because each of her three different worlds has built upon and strengthened the others. What do they all have in common? They all required Stacey to exercise her unique perspective, depth of experience, and pure love of storytelling.
RUBY ROCKET & INSIDE IMPROV

Stacey Hallal has toured across the globe performing and teaching sketch, improv, and stand up comedy at over 120 comedy festivals. Stacey’s current touring show, Ruby Rocket, Private Detective, has been performed across North America and Europe, and is heading to New Zealand and Australia this spring. The character of Ruby has come to life in web cartoons, live improv shows, a podcast, and a comic book produced with her creative partner, animator and illustrator, Sam Niemann.
Stacey also produces Inside Improv, a video podcast about all things improv from short form games and long form formats to theater leadership and inclusivity. While there are many wonderful books on improv, it can be hard to fully digest the concepts and explanations solely from the page. Stacey’s goal is to make an accessible resource for students and teachers who are seeking examples of their what they are learning.
CURIOUS COMEDY THEATER
Founder & Artistic Director - 17 yrs
In 2007, while she was a student in the Second City Chicago Directing Program, Stacey was told - point blank - that Second City would never hire a woman to direct their main stage. So, in 2008, Stacey moved to Portland, Oregon and founded Curious Comedy Theater. Curious now has two venues and is known as one of the most technologically advanced independent comedy theaters in the world. For the first 8 years, Stacey taught most of the classes as well as directed and performed in almost every show. Since then, Curious has build a legion of teachers, performers, and students and now produces over 350 shows a year and boasts over 50 performers and 180 students at any given time.
Meanwhile, Second City kept their word for well over a decade before finally hiring a woman director.
Every day, Stacey uses storytelling skills to oversee marketing efforts, to artistically direct all of Curious’ live and on-line productions, and to motivate staff, volunteers, and actors to perform at their best, despite limited resources. Stacey has also written grants that have earned Curious over $1,000,000 in technical gear and funding and has lead compelling crowdfunding campaigns that have raised over $150,000 in individual donations.
